Summer! It’s summer at last! Oh glory, the sun, warm breezes, long days! The powerful elixir of the sweet season’s memories past, and the anticipation of delights to come with every new summer make us young–no matter our age–forever in t-shirts, shorts, flip-flops and popsicle-purple lips. Sail on, dear friend, the summer is yours! Speaking of sailing, and of course weddings, fun parks, and cool indie-pop music full of yearning and caustic catchiness, do not miss Alvvays playing “Archie, Marry Me.”
Six volunteers have been selected to live on “Mars” in The Habitat. A two-car garage-sized dome that simulates a Mars-safe shelter in which they will live for a year. What could go wrong? This compellingly matter-of-fact audio diary covers the story of a NASA field test; not of equipment or shelter or supply, but of people. If the people don’t work the mission won’t work. Also, apparently in any space situation, making sure the, um, waste removal systems are finely-tuned… Interesting anecdotes just around that little nugget of a problem.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Seen it? Probably. Lately? If not, go for it. Every day for the rest of the summer you’ll daydream about calling in sick, borrowing a Ferrari, going to baseball games, parades, art museums, and all of the stuff that we would love to do and never do, or don’t do enough. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Danke schön, Ferris.
The Outermost House. Henry Beston’s memoir of a year in a tiny cottage on Cape Cod’s Coast Guard Beach is not a manifesto. It speaks of a very personal experience, written almost as if to himself without much thought of passing philosophical notes to a larger audience. By living in a place of transition, sometimes violent, between ocean and land, Beston observes and learns about Life. Lyrical, tempestuous, soothing and true to the heart, this is the book of the summer. (Never mind that it was published in 1928.)
Stressed? Well, that’s no good when you should be groovin’ to the easy summer beat. Here, try some Natural Calm. It’s fizzy, slightly fruity, and restores your natural magnesium and calcium balance. Don’t sweat the biology, nutrition and science details (unless you want to–it’s citric acid and magnesium carbonate + organic stevia and flavor). We love it and our real biology and psychology expert friends have it in their cupboards too.
